Twitter blue verification badge was introduced in 2009, till date only 2% of twitter 312 million active user can boast of been verified. In the past, the verification process include twitter contacting specific organisations, celebrities and popular figures that are considered worthy to get their account verified. but now twitter has made it easy for verification. Anyone with an account having a verified phone number, valid email address, a profile and a header photo, website, updated birthday, bio and public tweets can apply and fill the verification request form on twitter support page. More information such as uploading of a clear copy of a government issued ID and reasons why account should be verified will be requested. The company make it known that "an account may be verified based on its determination of public interest". This will help to identify a fake account from the original one.
